CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners at Spring Series II First Flight Championships at Shoreline Golf Links in Mountain View

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (March 26, 2018) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2017-2018 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday at the Spring Series II First Flight Championships at par-72 Shoreline Golf Links in Mountain View.

Jalen Xing, a member of Youth on Course South Bay Muni, shot 1-over 73 to edge runner-up Nathan Park and win the Boys’ First Flight title. Xing had three birdies to go against four bogeys.

Park, a member of YOC East Bay, shot 75 to finish alone in second place. Matthew Lee of YOC East Bay and Calton Kong of YOC Santa Teresa shot 76 to finish T-3. Lee earned third place in a card-off.

Curtis Dasila of YOC Monterey Bay, Calvin Kong of NCGA YOC Santa Teresa and Travis Clauson of Ironwood CC all finished T-5 with rounds of 77.

Syndey Sung, a member of Youth on Course Santa Teresa, shot 6-over 78 and defeated Kristina Oh on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with a birdie to win the Girls’ First Flight crown.

Sung had a clutch birdie on the 16th in regulation. Oh, a member of YOC Santa Teresa, fell back with bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes.

Three players—Nicole Iniakov of YOC Monterey Bay, Tina Xu of NCGA and Darla May Dela Torre of YOC East Bay—all finished T-3 with identical scores of 79.

CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners at Spring Series II Championship at Coyote Creek Golf Club in San Jose

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (March 26, 2018) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2017-2018 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday at the Spring Series II Championship at Coyote Creek Golf Club in San Jose.

Folsom resident Paramdeep Sodhi shot 2-under 142 and San Jose resident Kaleiya Romero shot 2-over 146 to win their respective divisions at the Spring Series II Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-72 Valley Course at Coyote Creek.

Sodhi notched his first win of the season thanks to great play in the second round. On Sunday, Sodhi posted six birdies to go against just three bogeys.

On the front-nine, Sodhi had four birdies for a 34. He’d card an even-par 35 on the back-nine to defeat runner-up Ethan Chung of Cupertino by a stroke. In the first round, Sodhi posted a 73.

Chung, the Boys’ points leader entering the championship, had rounds of 70-73. On Sunday, Chung got to a total of 3-under with a birdie on No.2. He’d go on, however, to bogey holes No.7 and Nos.10-12 to fall back to 1-over. Two late birdies weren’t enough to catch Sodhi.

Third place went to Ryan Grauman of Alamo with a two-day score of 144 following a final round 73. Akira Asayama of Palo Alto and Carlos Arieta Winsett of Los Altos finished T-4 at 146 after rounds of 73 and 75, respectively.

In the Girls Championship, Romero got her first JTNC victory of the season, carding a final round 74 to defeat runner-up Katherine Zhu of San Jose by two shots.

Romero was steady in both rounds, shooting 72-74. On Saturday, she’d card three birdies to offset three bogeys. A day later, Romero again posted three birdies to go against three bogeys and a double-bogey. In two other starts, Romero had finished T-3.

Zhu had a final round 73 to come in at 148.

Four players—Charlotte Ryoo of Pleasanton, Madelyn Gamble of Pleasant Hill, San Jose’s Angela Liu and Santa Clara’s Andrea Gomez—finished T-3 at 150.

Katelyn Vo of San Jose had the shot of the tournament, acing the 159-yard par-3 11th in the first round.

Next up on the JTNC calendar is the Spring Series III Championship, to be held April 7-8 at Paso Robles GC in Paso Robles.

 PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (March 19, 2018) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2017-2018 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Thursday at the Spring Series I Championship at Stockton Golf and Country Club and Elkhorn Golf Club in Stockton.

Olivehurst resident Trey Davis shot 3-over 145 and defeated Darren Pang of San Ramon in a playoff and Roseville resident Sienna Lyford shot 10-over 152 to win their respective divisions at the Spring Series I Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-71 Stockton G&CC and par-71 Elkhorn GC.

Davis nabbed his first win of the season by making a par on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff versus Pang. Davis made his big move with a sizzling first round 5-under 66 at Elkhorn. He’d card six birdies—including a stretch of three in a row—to go against one bogey.

In Sunday’s finale, he’d fall back with a 79 that let Pang back into it. Coming off a first round 74, Pang posted 14 pars, two birdies and a bogey to force a playoff.

Placing third at 146 after a final round 74 was Manteca’s Ty Griggs. Griggs had a chance to join the playoff but bogeyed the 18th .

Alamo’s Ryan Grauman and Lodi’s Justin Gums both finished T-4 at 147 after final rounds of 71 and 76, respectively.

In the Girls Championship, Lyford got her first win of the season following a great comeback. A day after shooting 81, Lyford posted 14 pars with two birdies and two bogeys to hold off runner-up Angela Bagasbas of Danville by two shots.

Entering the championship, Lyford had two runner-ups and a third place finish. Bagasbas had back-to-back rounds of 77. She’d card five birdies in the final round but also had a double-bogey and triple-bogey.

Four players—Jacqueline Ha of San Ramon, Selena Tang of Fremont, Santa Clara’s Andrea Gomez and Kaleiya Romero of San Jose—all finished T-3 at 156.

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Nathan Jetton of El Dorado had a final round 67 to come in at 144, defeating co-runners-up William Bensch of Stockton and Curtis DaSilva of Marina by five strokes. Bensch had a second round 70 that featured 19 putts!

Fourth place went to Aditya Das of Fremont at 153, while Folsom’s Reese Sato was fifth at 154.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Abigail Leighton of Santa Rosa had a final round 82 to come in at 163 and defeated Nikki Chindavong of Fairfield in a playoff two win. Chindavong shot 85 in the final round.

Third place went to Harper Clementz of San Francisco at 166, while Kaylen Tu of Orinda was fourth at 167. Camille Thai of Los Altos and Amelia Garibaldi of Stockton were T-5 at 173.

Next up on the JTNC calendar is the Spring Series II Championship, slated for March 24-25 at Coyote Creek GC in San Jose. The First Flight will be at Shoreline GL on March 24.

Challenge Cup Returns to Poppy Hills Jan. 3-4

Who’s going to take the lead in the Cup series?

We’ll find out on Jan. 3-4, when the third annual Challenge Cup returns to Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach.

Featuring 12 members (eight boys, four girls) of the CIG-sponsored Junior Tour of Northern California taking on 12 players from the Southern California Junior Tour in a Ryder Cup-like format, last year the North evened the series at 1-1 with a 15-9 victory.

There’s much more to the Cup than just the rivalry, however. At last year’s Cup, the players raved about the event for a number of reasons including the camaraderie and format, which gives them a rare opportunity to compete not only as a team but also in match play.

 

The Cup has also become a scouting hot spot for coaches from collegiate programs such as UCLA, University of Oregon, Cal, Stanford and New Mexico State.

“We hope that through continued growth, the Cup becomes one of the premier junior team events on the West Coast,” said JTNC director Aaron Hartesveldt.

So far, it certainly appears headed that way.

Play on Wednesday, Jan.3 will consist of nine holes of Foursomes and nine holes of Four-Ball. Thursday’s (Jan. 4) action will feature the Singles matches.

The four girls who’ll tee it up for the JTNC are:

Sabrina Iqbal—A record four-time Girls’ Player of the Year, Iqbal already has four wins this season and six Top 5’s. The San Jose resident is the all-time leader in JTNC wins with 25.

Mika Jin—Jin, who hails from Fremont, has one win plus four Top 5’s and 7 Top 10’s this season.

Kiran Sangha—The San Mateo resident has one win plus four Top 5’s and six Top 10’s this season.

Yealimi Noh—Noh, of Concord has two wins in her two starts this season, the victories coming at the Fall Series IV and VIII Championships. She is also the defending NCGA/CIF NorCal champion.

 

The eight JTNC boys will be:

Ethan Chung—Chung, of Cupertino, has two wins and five Top 5’s this season, including a runner-up at the Fall Series I Championship.

Sebastian Iqbal—The San Jose resident has five Top 5’s and six Top 10’s this season, including a pair of runner-ups.

Carlos Arieta-Winsett—From Los Altos, Arieta-Winsett has a win to go with four Top 5’s and six Top 10’s.

Caleb Shetler—Shetler, of Saratoga, has a win to go with four Top 5’s and six Top 10’s this season.

Justin Gums—The Lodi resident has a win and a runner-up at the Fall Series VII Championship.

Sam Sommerhauser—The Rocklin resident has a win to go with two Top 10’s.

Brian Stark—Stark, of Kingsburg, has one win this season. He also finished T-14 at the Junior PGA Championship.

George McNeely—The Carmel resident was runner-up at the Fall Series VII and reached the Round of 32 at the 2017 NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship.

Junior Tour of Northern California members Annika Borrelli and Katie Harris didn’t get the big prize, but they certainly left an impression at the PURE Insurance Championship Impacting The First Tee.

Borrelli, representing The First Tee of Tri-Valley, and Harris, playing out of The First Tee of Greater Sacramento, each at one point held the lead in the Pro-Junior portion of the event before eventually finishing fifth and T-6, respectively.

Playing with pro partner Sir Nick Faldo, Borrelli closed out the championship with a 3-under 69 Sunday at Pebble Beach Golf Links. In Friday’s first round at Poppy Hills GC, the two posted a 9-under 62.

“It was awesome to be in the presence of a legend,” Borrelli said. “Just such an incredible experience.”

It was at Poppy Hills that Borrelli picked up her greatest tip from Faldo—believing in yourself.

“We were on the 18th hole and I had 200 yards in. I didn’t think I could get there,” Borrelli said. “He told me go with my 180-club and just have confidence, to believe in myself.”

Borrelli would indeed knock it on the green, and for good measure sank a 100-foot putt.

Harris, playing fellow former Masters champion Vijay Singh, had entered Sunday’s final round in the lead. The two slipped to a 72, but Harris was still all smiles afterwards.

“The biggest lesson I got from Vijay was to just trust myself and the shot,” Harris said. “I never expected that’d I’d make it to Sunday. To do it with him was incredible.”

The JTNC has been a force at the PURE Insurance Championship in recent years. Champions include Casie Cathrea (2011), Michelle Xie (2013) and Jack Avrit (2015). In 2014, former JTNC Player of the Year Joshua McCarthy finished runner-up.

The Junior Tour of Northern California rolled to a win to take the lead in the annual Challenge Cup.

The JTNC claimed a dominating 17-7 victory over the Southern California Junior Tour, closing out play in the two-day event at Poppy Hills Golf Course with an 8-4 win in Singles play. Winning their matches for the JTNC were Justin Gums, Carlos Arieta Winsett, Sam Sommerhauser, Ethan Chung, George McNeely, Yealimi Noh and Sabrina Iqbal. Getting halves were Sebastian Iqbal and Caleb Shetler.

Winning in Singles for the SCJT were Ray Navis, Jasmine Lew and Amari Avery. The JTNC took a commanding 9-3 over the SCJT on opening day, running the table in both Foursome and Four-Ball.

For the players, the Cup is unique in that it’s a chance to compete as a team, and not as individuals.

“I like that it’s a team format. Everything else I play in is an individual tournament so it’s a new experience,” said Mika Jin. “It’s fun too to get to meet the players from SoCal. It’s fun to compare your games.”

Now in its third year, the Cup too has become a hot spot for collegiate coaches looking to scout available players. Among the programs out in the rain watching first round action were University of Oregon, Stanford, Oklahoma State, North Carolina and Illinois.

The JTNC now leads in the series, 2-1.

The Junior Tour of Northern California got off to a brilliant start, but there’s still another day to go.

The JTNC took a commanding 9-3 over the Southern California Junior Tour on opening day of the 2018 Cup, running the table in both Foursome and Four-Ball on a rainy Wednesday at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

In the morning Four-Ball matches, the JTNC got wins from Kiran Sangha/Mika Jin, Sebastian Iqbal/Ethan Chung, Justin Gums/Sam Sommerhauser and George McNeely/Brian Stark. The SCJT got a win from the tandem of Guy Clauss/Tyler Schafer.

In the afternoon matches, the JTNC again racked up four points, getting a win from the tandem of Sabrina Iqbal and Yealimi Noh. Iqbal is the all-time leader in JTNC wins with 25.

For the players, the Cup is a chance to compete as a team, and not as individuals.

“I like that it’s a team format. Everything else I play in is an individual tournament so it’s a new experience,” Jin said. “It’s fun too to get to meet the players from SoCal. It’s fun to compare your games.”

Challenge Cup is our two day team match play event played against a team from the Southern California Junior Tour.   Over the last couple of years this has put together some of the states best players here at Poppy Hills.

We will select a team based on Fall Series points; the top six boys and three girls in the Player of the Year race will get an automatic invite.  (All points must come from Championship Flights.) We are also reserving three captains picks, which will be two boys and a girl, and will be picked by our committee.  To be picked as a captain’s pick a player must have played at least one Fall Series event.

Boys’ Player of the Year

San Ramon’s Ashkaan Hakim left the JTNC the way he’d wanted to.

Headed to St. Mary’s College this fall, Hakim wrapped up 2016-2017 Boys’ Player of the Year honors when he finished T-3 at the season-ending Tour Championship.  The 18-year-old former Monte Vista High standout finished the season with 1,984 points, edging runner-up Ryan Grauman of Alamo (1,823).  Defending Boys’ Player of the Year Thomas Hutchison (1,721) was also in the running despite missing some playing time due to an injury.

“With this being my last eligible year, there was definitely extra motivation,” Hakim said. “Winning Player of the Year has been a goal of mine ever since playing in the First Flight events at the age of 11. I take great pride in presenting Northern California golf as best I can.”

In nine JTNC starts, Hakim posted two victories (Fall Series VII, Spring Series VI) and seven Top 5 finishes. He also won the AmateurGolf.com Christmas Classic and finished T-3 at the NCGA Junior Championship.

“I owe so much to the JTNC and the opportunities it has provided me,” Hakim said. “I’ve gained so much experience playing against some of the best competition in the country. We’re lucky to be able to play such well-run events at such nice courses.”

Girls’ Player of the Year

San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal just keeps on breaking new ground.

A 16-year-old senior at Pioneer High, Iqbal secured a record fourth straight and fourth overall Girls’ Player of the Year title for the 2016-2017 season. The only other player to have won three Girls’ Player of the Year crowns is former junior standout Casie Cathrea.

Having already verbally committed to Texas Christian University, Iqbal finished the season with 4,158 points. The next closest player was Concord’s Yealimi Noh (3,392). Third place went to Mika Jin of Fremont at 1,864.

A quartet of JTNC players–two boys and two girls—earned automatic spots into this year’s Girls’ and Boys’ Junior PGA Championships via their finishes at the Summer Series II Championship.

Champion Lucas Carper of San Jose, who shot 7-under 137 in the event at Poppy Ridge, and Palo Alto’s Sergi Mata, who was second at 138, earned the Boys’ spots.

On the Girls’ side, champion Belinda Hu of San Ramon, who shot 141, and runner-up Sabrina Iqbal (143) advanced. Iqbal, the reigning three-time JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year, defeated Danielle Suh and Simar Singh in a playoff to grab the last spot.

This year’s Girls’ Junior PGA Championship was held July 18-21 at The Country Club of St. Albans in Missouri. The Boys’ Junior PGA Championship will tee off July 31-Aug. 3 at St. Albans.

Stark, a junior at Central Valley Christian High in Visalia, fired a final round 4-under 68 to hold off Ryan Grauman and a number of other players and win the annual NCGA Junior Championship Tuesday at par-72 Contra Costa Country Club. Stark joins an illustrious list of champions of the event including Johnny Miller (1963), Bobby Clampett (1976) and Matt Bettencourt (1991).

Having entered the final round holding just a one-shot lead over Grauman, Stark opened with a sizzling 4-under 32 on the front-nine thanks to four birdies. On the back-nine, he was steady, posting a birdie and bogey for a 36. He’d finish the 54-hole event with a total score of 8-under 208.

Grauman, who hails from Alamo, did his best to keep up, carding a front-nine 33 to stay within two of the leader.

16-18After making the turn, Grauman tied Stark following a birdie on the par-3 12th. But Stark went on to regain a one-stroke lead following a birdie on the 15th. Grauman lost another stroke following a bogey on the par-4 16th. The pair would both play the final two holes at even-par, leaving Grauman with a 69 and three-round score of 210.

Finishing in a tie for third at 213 were San Ramon’s Ashkaan Hakim and Max Holm of Walnut Creek following matching final rounds of 71.

boys15Fifth place went to San Jose’s Sebastian Iqbal at even-par 214 following a final round 72. Iqbal, the younger brother of three-time defending JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year Sabrina Iqbal.was competing in the Boys’ 14-15 division, where he was crowned champion. Finishing as runner-up in the Boys’ 14-15 division was Lincoln’s Sam Sommerhauser, who came in a stroke behind at 215 following a 71. Sommerhauser and Iqbal had been tied but Sommerhauser was stung by a bogey on the par-5 17th.

In the Boys’ 10-13 division, San Jose’s Gregory Lee had a final round 74 to finish at 152 and claim a three shot victory of Marina’s Curtis Dasilva.

Girls Championship

girlNoh, a junior at Carondelet High, posted a final round 73 to come in at even-par 144 and claim a five-shot victory. A day after opening with a 1-under 71, Noh started slowly, posting a front-nine 38. She’d close the door or her pursuers, however, by bouncing back with a 1-under 35 on the back-nine thanks to back-to-back birdies on holes No.16 and No.17.

Among those trying to catch Noh was two-time defending champion Sabrina Iqbal of San Jose. Iqabl had a 73 to come in at 149, tying for second with Quynn Duong of San Jose and Caris Kim of Los Altos. Iqbal, a senior at Pioneer High, looked like she was going to make a charge by opening with birdies on holes No.2 and No.3. She’d slip backwards though by playing her next four holes at 3-over.

gilrschampsDuong also birdied No.2 but went on to play her next five holes at 3-over. Kim, who was coming off an opening round 77, shaved five strokes with a 72 but could not get any closer.

Fifth place went to Beah Cruz of Rancho Murieta at 152 following a 75.

Spots In Junior PGA Championships Will Be Up For Grabs at JTNC Summer Series II Championship

There’ll more than titles on the line when the JTNC Summer Series II Championship tees off June 14-15 at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.

Thanks to an expansion of the field size for this year’s Junior PGA Championships, the JTNC will be allotted four spots into the championships proper. Two of the automatic spots will be the winners of the Boys’ and Girls’ Championship Divisions of the Summer Series II Championship, respectively. One other boy and one other girl will also receive exemptions via at-large selections.

2016 Girls’ Junior PGA champion Lucy Li

This year’s Junior PGA Championship will be held July 31-Aug.3 at The Country Club of St. Albans near St. Louis. The Girls’ PGA Junior Championship will also be held at The Country Club of St. Albans from July 18-21.

Among those who have competed in the Junior PGA Championship include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson. Last year, JTNC member Lucy Li won the Girls’ title.

Registration for the Summer Series II will open May 19 for any player who has won a JTNC event in the previous 12 months. Registration for other players will run from May 22-June 2.
