CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners in Fall Series II Championship at Cypress Lakes Golf Club

 PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 24, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday at the Fall Series II Championship at Cypress Lakes Golf Club in Vacaville.

Alamo resident Ryan Grauman shot 1-under 143 and San Ramon resident Yoonhee Kim shot 1-over 145 to win their respective divisions at the Fall Series II Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-72 Cypress Lakes Golf Club.

Grauman put together two terrific rounds to win by three over Ahmed Ali of Palo Alto.

In Saturday’s first round, he’d take a three-shot lead over the field after posting a 71 that included four birdies and three bogeys.

A day later, Grauman continued to shine, shooting an even-par 72 that featured five birdies and five bogeys.

Ali, who competed in this year’s inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Olympic Club, tried to make a charge but was unable to catch Grauman. A day after posting a 76, Ali fired a tourney-low 70 by carding three birdies to go against just one bogey.

Finishing in a tie for third at 147 were Kyle Wilkinson of San Francisco and Joshua McCarthy of Danville.

Both Wilkinson and McCarthy put together rounds of 74-73. The 2014 JTNC Player of the Year, McCarthy was coming off a second place finish at the recent Fall Series I Championship.

Taking fifth place in the Boys’ Championship at 148 was San Jose’s Berk Harvey, who shot identical rounds of 74.

Kim also ran away from the field to take the title.

The runner-up at this year’s California Women’s Amateur Championship, Kim found herself tied for the lead after Saturday’s first round with San Mateo’s Amanjoty Sangha at 74.

In Sunday’s finale, Kim, a senior at Dougherty Valley High, broke away from not only Sangha but everyone else. She’d post a solid 1-under 71 featuring two birdies and just one bogey.

Sangha, meanwhile, had a 76 to come in second at 150.

Tying for third place at 153 were Kiran Sangha of San Mateo and Concord resident Yealimi Noh, who shot final rounds of 75 and 76, respectively. Kiran Sangha was awarded third place in a card-off.

Sangha, the younger sister of Amanjoty, won the Girls’ Championship at the recent JTNC Tour Championship at Poppy Hills GC. Noh finished second in last season’s JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year standings to winner Sabrina Iqbal of San Jose.

Finishing in fifth place in the Girls’ Championship at 156 was Pleasanton’s Annie Liu, who went 82-74.

Over in the Boys’ First Flight Championship, things were much tighter.

In Sunday’s final round, Ben Johannes of Ceres and Alexander Lin of Oakland shot 77 and 78, respectively, to finish regulation tied at 160. In a sudden-death playoff, Lin emerged victorious.

Three players—Nathan Chen of San Ramon, Jared Khoo of Danville and Nathan Wang of Fremont—all finished just a stroke outside of the playoff. Chen had a final round 77, Khoo shot 81 and Wang had an 82. In a card-off (low score back-nine), Chen was awarded third place.

Over in the Girls’ First Flight Championship, San Jose resident Kristine Tran had a final round 84 to edge runner-up Patricia Sweeney of Folsom by three shots. Sweeny had a final round 83 but had opened with an 86.

Third place went o to Courtney Cervellin of Elk Grove at 170, while San Ramon’s Steffi Lin and Novato’s Kiana Briggs shared fourth place at 171.

Next up on the schedule is the Fall Series III Championship, to be held Sept. 6-7 at Spring Valley Golf Course in Milpitas.

CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners in Fall Series I Championship at Paso Robles Golf Club

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (August 17, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday at the Fall Series I Championship at Paso Robles Golf Club in Paso Robles.

Newark resident Jeremy Villafuerte shot 8-under 134 and Campbell resident Clare Brady shot 8-over 150 to win their respective divisions at the Fall Series I Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-71 Paso Robles Golf Club.

The event was the season opener for the 2015-2016 JTNC season.

Despite temperatures hovering around 100 degrees, Villafuerte was able to put together two fantastic rounds to take the title.

In Saturday’s first round, he’d open with a sizzling 5-under 66 that included five birdies to go against zero bogeys. A day later, Villafuerte remained hot, posting a 3-under 68 that featured five birdies. He’d seal the victory within the first three holes, carding birdies on holes No.1 through No.3. The only mistake he’d make all weekend was a double-bogey on the par-4 16^th.

Among those trying to catch Villafuerte was 2014 JTNC Player of the Year Joshua McCarthy. Coming off a first round 70, McCarthy also opened the final round with three straight birdies. He’d tack on three more birdies, but also had two bogeys to come in with a 67 and two-day total of 137, finishing three strokes behind Villafuerte.

Also hoping to make a charge was Davis resident Sam Yamauchi. Coming off an opening round 72, Yamauchi started the second round slowly with a front-nine 1-over 36. On the back-nine, though, Yamauchi, who placed third, was a force. He’d post a 6-under 30 thanks to an eagle on the par-5 10^th and four straight birdies from holes No.15 through No.10.

Folsom resident and fourth place finisher Austin Fox also went low on Sunday, carding a 65 that featured two eagles (holes No.10 and No.12), six birdies and four bogeys.

Fifth place went to Saratoga’s Caleb Shetler, who came in at 142 after a final round 70.

The Girls’ Championship was also a shoot-out.

On Saturday, San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal, who won JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year honors for the 2014-2015 season, took the first round lead with a 4-over 75 that featured three birdies.

A day later, Iqbal couldn’t find a way to post any more birdies. Instead, the Pioneer High sophomore had to settle for five bogeys leading to a 76 and two-day total of 151.

With Iqbal in neutral, it opened the door for Brady. Coming off a first round 79, Brady played her Sunday front-nine at 1-under after carding four birdies to go against three bogeys.

On her back-nine, Brady was steady, posting only one bogey for a 71. Despite the bogey, she was able to hold and defeat Iqbal by a stroke.

Also in the running was San Ramon’s Angela Bagasbas. Coming off a first round 78, Bagasbas had a Sunday 74 that pushed her to a two-day total of 152, just two shots behind Brady. Bagasbas had a birdie on her back-nine, but had previously posted two bogeys to slow her charge.

Finishing in fourth place at 158 following a final round 77 was Tiffany Cha of San Ramon. Fifth place went to Palo Alto’s Stephanie Yu at 161 after a final round 78.

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Salinas resident Aj Fitzgerald took home the title, coming in with a two-day total of 145 after a final round 71. Over his 36 holes, Fitzgerald had four birdies to go against seven bogeys.

Placing second was Philip McNamara of Bakersfield, who finished at 150 following a 75. Third place went to Casey Leebrick of San Luis Obispo at 151 following a 76.

Over in the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Vanessa Van Pell of Lafayette took the title, shooting a final round 78 to come in at 162 and defeat runner-up Katie Kaminski by three shots.

Kaminski,of Los Gatos, had a final round 76. Steffi Lin of San Ramon placed third at 173 following an 87.

Saturday’s first round saw a hole-in-one. Joson Ralph of Sunnyvale aced the 157-yard par-3 8^th hole.

Next up on the JTNC calendar is the Fall Series II Championship, to be held August 22-23 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course in Vacaville.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 28, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Tuesday at the JTNC Tour Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Sam Jose resident Justin Suh shot 1-under 141 and San Mateo resident Kiran Sangha shot 10-over 152 to win their respective divisions at the JTNC Tour Championship held Monday and Tuesday at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course.

Playing in his final junior tournament, Suh posted a final round 1-under 70 to come from a stroke behind to take the title by two strokes over four players.

A freshman-to-be at USC, Suh posted three birdies and two bogeys in the finale. He’d arrive at the par-5 18^th at a total of 1-under, but had to settle for par.

“I felt like my putting and driving was going to be the key to playing well here. And I did that. I read the greens really well,” Suh said.

In Monday’s first round, the 18-year-old Suh shot even-par with three birdies and three bogeys. He entered the final round a stroke behind a pack of four players who had opened with 70.

“I figured that the last two to three groups, it was really anyone’s game,” Suh said. “It was my last junior tournament so I wanted to make a run.”

Finishing tied for second at 1-over 143 were Fremont’s Aaron Chen, San Jose’s Thomas Hutchison, Cameron Henry of Los Gatos and Eddy Lai of San Jose. Chen was awarded second place in a card-off, with Lai placing third.

Chen had the low round of the day, carding a 69 that featured six birdies and four bogeys. Hutchison, who finished runner-up to Suh at this year’s San Francisco City Amateur, shot a 71 with three birdies and three bogeys.

Both Henry and Lai, who won the NCGA Junior Championship at Spyglass Hill earlier this month, had final round 73’s.

For Sangha, the biggest threat would be her older sister, Amanjoty.

Both Kiran, a sophomore at San Mateo High, and Amanjoty, a senior at San Mateo, entered the final round tied for the lead after opening with matching scores of 74.

In the final round, Kiran shot 78 while Amanjoty had an 81, giving Kiran the title by three shots.

“We root for each other. I was just playing my own game,” Kiran said. “I didn’t push too hard.”

The big difference came on the tougher Poppy Hills’ front-nine, where Kiran went 3-over while Amanjoty went 9-over.

“I just didn’t play well on the front-nine,” said Amanjoty, adding that the two don’t have a rivalry. “I had a tough time staying in the fairway.”

The two picked up golf from their father, who took them to the driving range at Poplar Creek GC when they were younger.

“We were lucky the first day shooting the same score,” Amanjoty said. “It was fun.”

Finishing third in the Girls’ Championship at 156 was Naomi Lee of Menlo Park, who carded two straight 78’s.

Fourth place went to San Jose’s Samantha Oliva at 157 while Yoonhee Kim of San Ramon took fifth at 158.

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, it was a runaway as John Heckel of San Jose shot a final round 73 to come in at 2-over 144, defeating runner-up Edward Anaya of Orinda by eight strokes.

Heckel, who opened with a stellar 71, had seven birdies, seven bogeys and a double-bogey over his 36 holes.

Anaya shot rounds of 77-75, while third place finisher Micheal Deklerk of Los Altos had rounds of 78-75.

Fourth place in the Boys’ First Flight went to San Luis Obispo’s Casey Leebrick at 157, with fifth place going to Douglas Burton of San Jose at 159.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Audrey Lin of Fremont had a final round 74 for a two-day total of 153 and a one stroke win over Doodle Yuen (80-74) of Los Gatos.

Third place went to Emily Lu of San Jose at 163, fourth place was won by San Jose’s Kristine Tran (164) and fifth place went to Alameda’s Elizabeth Scholtes at 165.

With his victory, Suh also wrapped up 2014-2015 JTNC Boys’ Player of the Year honors. Suh, who also won Player of the Year honors in 2013, finished the season with 2,260 points.

Girls’ Player of the Year honors went to San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal, who finished the 2014-2015 campaign with 3,955 points. It’s the second straight year that Iqbal has earned the honor.

The Tour Championship concluded the 2014-2015 JTNC season. Next up will be the 2015-2016 season opening Fall Series I Championship at Paso Robles Country Club in Paso Robles.

The leaderboards are jammed after Monday’s first round of the annual CIG-sponsored JTNC Tour Championship at par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

In the Boys’ Championship, five players are tied for the lead at 70, while in the Girls’ Championship two players are tied atop the standings at 74.

The leading five in the Boys’ Championship are Andrew Arnheiter of El Macero, Cameron Henry of Los Gatos, Eddy Lai of San Jose, Pleasanton’s Noah Woolsey and San Jose’s Ryan Vaughn.

Lai, winner of the recent the NCGA Junior Championship, posted two birdies and three bogeys plus an eagle on the par-5 9th. Woolsey, who won three events during the 2014-2015 JTNC season, also had two birdies, three bogeys and an eagle on the 9th.

Both Lai and Woolsey entered the season-ending championship at No.5 and No.2, respectively, in the JTNC Boys’ Player of the Year standings.

San Jose’s Justin Suh, who’s headed to USC in the fall and came in holding the No.1 spot, is one stroke off the lead along with Brad Reeves of Woodbridge and Ryan Burnett of Lafayette following an opening 71. Four players, including No.3 Thomas Hutchison of San Jose and Danville’s Joshua McCarthy, are just two strokes behind the leaders after opening with 72. McCarthy, who entered the season finale at No.4 in the standings, won last year’s Boys’ Player of the Year title.

Over in the Girls’ Championship, it’s a family affair as sisters Kiran and Amanjoty Sangha grabbed a share of the lead with matching 74’s. Kiran Sangha posted three birdies to go against six bogeys, while Amanjoty had four birdies but also five bogeys and a double-bogey.

Alone in third place is San Ramon’s Jacqueline Ha at 76, while four players, including Emily Rotter of Fremont and Danville’s Ysabel Magat, are T-4 after opening with 78.

San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal, who entered the championship holding the No.1 spot in the Girls’ Player of the Year standings and is a shoo-in to earn her second straight Player of the Year crown, is not competing.

Things are also tight in the Boys’ First Flight Championship. There, John Heckel of San Jose leads after a 71, but he’s got Jared Khoo of Danville, who shot 72, just a stroke behind him. Alex Horn of Belmont is also in the mix, alone in third following an opening 75.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Emily Lu of San Jose grabbed the lead with a 76. Elizabeth Scholtes of Alameda is in second at 78, with Fremont’s Audrey Lin in third at 79.

Tuesday’s final round will begin at 7 a.m. with the Boys’ First Flight to be followed by the Girls’ First Flight. The Boys’ Championship leaders will go off at 1:30 p.m., while the Girls’ Championship leaders will tee off at 8:40 a.m.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 22, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Tuesday in the Summer Series V Championship at San Jose Country Club and Santa Teresa Golf Club.

Pleasanton resident Noah Woolsey shot 7-under 134 and San Ramon resident Yoonhee Kim shot 9-over 150 to win their respective divisions at the Summer Series V Championship held Monday and Tuesday at par-71 Santa Teresa Golf Club and par-70 San Jose Country Club.

Woolsey, a junior at Amador Valley High, had two terrific rounds in claiming his third JTNC title of the year.

In Monday’s opening round at Santa Teresa GC, Woolsey jumped out to a three stroke lead after shooting a stellar, bogey-free 65 that included an eagle on the par-5 2^nd hole and four birdies.

Woolsey continued his strong play a day later at San Jose CC, posting a 69 to claim a five stroke win over runner-up Joshua McCarthy of Danville. Over his 36 holes, Woolsey, whose previous wins came at the Spring Series III and Spring Series VIII Championships, carded an eagle and seven birdies to go against just two bogeys.

McCarthy, the 2014 JTNC Boys’ Player of the Year, was steady in his first round, posting two birdies and a bogey with 15 pars for a 70. On Tuesday, McCarthy was again consistent, penciling in three birdies with just two bogeys for a 69 and two-day total of 139.

Half Moon Bay resident Derek Ackerman, who opened with a solid 68 that featured five birdies and just two bogeys, fell back to third place at 142 after coming in with a final round 74 at San Jose CC.

Four players—Max Menconi of Carmichael, Woodbridge’s Brad Reeves, Fremont’s Alex Zhu and Brandon Choe of Orinda—all finished tied for fourth at 145. Menconi was the big mover of the four, carding a final round 69.

Reeves had a 70, Zhu shot 72 and Choe had a 73 in the finale.

Kim also had a huge first round that led to her second JTNC win of the season.

The winner of this year’s NCGA/CIF Girls’ Northern California Championship, Kim opened the championship with a stellar even-par 71. Playing at San Jose CC, Kim was solid, carding two birdies and 15 pars to go with just one bogey. The round gave her a comfy eight stroke lead over the rest of the field entering the final round.

On Tuesday at Santa Teresa GC, Kim fell back with a 79, but she’d still win by four strokes over runner-up Maya Pugatch of San Jose.

Pugatch opened with a 79, but rebounded in the second round posting a 75 that included a birdie, three bogeys and a double-bogey for a two-day total of 154 and second place.

Tiffany Cha of San Ramon, who was coming off a victory at the Summer Series IV Championship, had rounds of 80-75 to finish in third place at 155.

Lydia Tsai of Palo Alto took fourth at 157 (83-74) while San Ramon’s Angela Bagasbas placed fifth at 158 (85-73). A day after carding 11 bogeys, Bagasbas had two birdies to go with only four bogeys.

Over in the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Jacques Le of San Jose rode an impressive second round to a six shot win.

Coming off an opening round 77, Le took it deep, carding a second round 69 at Santa Teresa GC that featured four birdies and two bogeys for a two-day total of 146.

Three players—Shaan Gagneja of Cupertino, William Yao of Santa Clara and Edward Anaya of Orinds—all came in tied for second at 152. Yao, who had a final round 75, was awarded second place in a card-off determined by lower back-nine score. Taking third place in the card-off was Gagneja, who had a final round 75. Anaya had a 76.

Finishing in fifth place at 153 following a final round 70 was Pacific Grove’s Matthew Lynberg.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, things were a bit tighter. Kristie Tran of San Jose had a final round 75 to come in at 156, defeating runner-up Audrey Im of Danville by a stroke.

Im, who had a final round 78 to come in at 157, had a shot at forcing extra holes but carded a bogey on the 18^th hole.

Finishing in third place at 159 following a final round 78 was Alina Feng of Sunnyvale. Audrey Lin of Fremont took fourth place at 160 after a 73, while Isabelle Castro of San Jose placed fifth at 162 following a 77.

CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners in Summer Series IV at Schaffer’s Mill Golf Club

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 16, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Wednesday in the Summer Series IV Championship at Schaffer’s Mill Golf Club in Truckee.

Fremont resident Vivek Vasireddy shot 2-under 140 and San Ramon resident Tiffany Cha shot 14-over 156 to win their respective divisions at the Summer Series IV Championship held Tuesday and Wednesday at par-71 Schaffer’s Mill Golf Club.

Vasireddy picked up his first win of the season thanks to a sensational second round.

In Tuesday’s first round, Vasireddy opened play with an even-par 71 after carding three birdies to go with three bogeys. He’d trail leader Bryson Zorich by one. Zorich, of Rocklin, carded an opening 70 that featured an eagle on the par-5 14^th to go with four birdies and five bogeys.

A day later, it was Vasireddy who had the hotter hand. In the finale, Vasireddy was steady, opening with a front-nine 1-under 34 that included two birdies and just one bogey. On the back-nine, he’d also go 1-under, posting a birdie to go with eight pars for a 69 and two-day total of 140.

While Vasireddy was in cruise control, Zorich slipped to a second round 74. Zorich got off to a slow start, carding a double-bogey on the par-4 1^st hole. He’d play his next nine holes at even par, but went backwards again following a triple-bogey on the par-4 11^th. Zorich played his final seven holes at 2-under, but by then Vasireddy had things locked up, going on to win by four strokes.

Also coming in at 144 and finishing tied for second was Davis resident Sam Yamauchi. A day after opening with a 73, Yamauchi made a run up the leaderboard with a 71 that featured three birdies and three bogeys. In a card-off (lower back-nine score), Yamauchi was awarded second place with Zorich taking third.

Fourth place in the Boys’ Championship went to Reno’s Connor Motherway, who came in at 146 after rounds of 74-72. Napa’s Joseph Bosetti took fifth place at 147, shooting rounds of 74-73.

While Vasireddy wrapped things up in regulation, Cha had to go to extra holes to pick up her first win of the season.

In what turned out to be a duel from start to finish, both Cha and Maddie Jun of Mountain View opened play with first round leading scores of 5-over 76. A day later, the two were still together, as they’d each card 80 to finish regulation tied at 156.

In a sudden-death playoff, Cha finally broke the tie, winning on the third hole.

During the final round, Cha held the lead at a total of 12-over with only four holes to play but she’d card a pair of bogeys to finish at 14-over. Jun, on the other hand, was at 15-over with just two holes to play. She’d birdie her 17^th hole and made par to finish her round.

There was also a tie in the Girls’ Championship for third place. There, Noor Ahmed of Folsom and Clare Brady of Campbell finished with matching scores of 160 after final rounds of 80 and 81, respectively. Ahmed was awarded third place after a card-off (lower back-nine score).

Finishing tied for fifth place at 162 were San Jose’s Aishvarya Bedi, who had a final round 79, and Lexi Perry of El Dorado Hills, who posted a final round 81.

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Jared Tungol of Lincoln put together two solid rounds for the victory.

Playing a shorter course than the Boys’ Championship, Tungol carded rounds of 71-74 to come in at 3-over 145 and defeat runner Sam Sommerhauser of Lincoln by five strokes.

In the first round, Tungol was steady, carding 10 pars to go with four birdies and four bogeys. The 71 gave him a three-stroke lead over the field.

Sommerhauser had rounds of 76-74, finishing at 150. Taking third place in the Boys’ First Flight Championship was Dylan McDermott of Granite Bay, who came in at 154 after rounds of 74-80.

Fourth place went to Kyle Kushnir of Los Altos Hills at 156 (81-75) while fifth place went to Atwater’s Shane Watts at 158 (76-82).

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Niav Layton of Palo Alto shot a final round 75 to come in at 151 and defeat runner-up Emma Sand of El  Dorado Hills by seven shots.

Sand had matching rounds of 79 each day. Taking third place was Kathering Sung of Palo Alto, who finished at 160 following two 80’s.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 23, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Tuesday in the Summer Series III Championship at El Macero Country Club in El Macero.

Los Altos resident Yash Majmudar shot 4-under 140 and Rocklin resident Nicole Schroeder shot 1-over 145 to win their respective divisions at the Summer Series III Championship held Monday and Tuesday at par-72 El Macero Country Club.

Majmudar picked up his first win of the 2014-2015 JTNC season thanks to a stellar second round.

On Tuesday, he’d card a 3-under 69 that featured five birdies—including back-to-back on holes No.10 and No.11—and two bogeys. With a birdie on the 15^th, Majmudar got to a total of 6-under. He’d bogey both the 16^th and 18^th but it wouldn’t matter, as he’d defeat co-runner-ups Thomas Hutchison, Andrew Arnheiter and Ryan Burnett by two strokes.

Hutchison, Arnheiter and Burnett all finished with two-day totals of 142.

Having won the recent Summer Series I Championship, Hutchison shot a final round 70 that featured four birdies and two bogeys. The San Jose resident got to 4-under total with a birdie on 14, but closed his round with back-to-back bogeys on the 17^th and 18^th. Hutchison would be awarded second place in a card-off (lowest back-nine score).

Arnheiter finished with a rollercoaster 72, carding four birdies but also four bogeys. Burnett, of Lafayette, got to 4-under with three straight birdies on holes No.7 through No.9. After making the turn, he’d card another birdie on the 11^th to get to 5-under, but on the 12^th he’d card a double-bogey to drop back to 3-under.

In Monday’s first round, Arnheiter grabbed a share of the lead with Vacaville’s Devyn Fitchhorn after shooting 70. Fitchhorn fell back to T-13 following a final round 79. Finishing in fifth place in the Boys’ Championship was Will Bednarz of Larkspur, who came in at 144 after rounds of 71-73.

For Schroeder, it was finally her chance to finish on top.

Coming off a third place finish at the Summer Series I Championship, Schroeder had a final round 71 to come from one back and win her first event of the season.

In Monday’s first round, Pleasanton resident Annie Liu took the lead with a 72 that featured five birdies and five bogeys. Schroeder opened with a 74, but in the second round she’d card five birdies to go against just two bogeys and a double-bogey. Schroeder stumbled early, carding a double-bogey on the par-5 5^th to fall back to a total of 4-over.

Over her next three holes, Schroeder more than made up for the error carding three straight birdies to get back to a total of 1-over. On her back-nine, Schroeder played even par, posting two birdies and two bogeys.

Liu shot a second round 75 to slip back into a tie for second place with Danville resident Ty Akabane at 147. Akabane, the winner of the Helen Lengfeld Flight at last year’s California Women’s Amateur Championship, shot a final round 73. In a card-off (lower back-nine), Akabane was awarded second place, with Liu taking third.

Finishing in fourth place in the Girls’ Championship was San Jose’s Sabrina Iqbal. Iqbal, who recently won three JTNC events in a row, came in at 148 after a final round 73. Sienna Lyford of Roseville finished fifth at 149 following a 75.

Over in the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Pleasanton resident Raymond Abels took the title, carding a final round 73 to finish at 146 and edge runner-up Brad Sparrer of Hollister by two shots. Abels shot back-to-back rounds of 73.

Sparrer, coming off a victory at the Summer Series II Championship, shot 75 after opening with a 73 to finish at 148.

Taking third in the Boys’ First Flight Championship was Matthew Lynberg of Pacific Grove at 149 after a 75. Finishing in a tie for fourth at 151 were Alex Hom of Belmont and Edward Anaya of Orinda after final rounds of 71 and 76, respectively.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Sammy Lee of San Ramon posted a 77 to come in a 159 and defeat runner-up Elizabeth Scholtes of Alameda by two strokes.

Scholtes shot a final round 79, finishing at 161. Both Faith Low of Foster City and Jasmine Chen of Pleasanton finished T-3 at 163 after final rounds of 80 and 82, respectively. Low was named the third place winner in a card-off. Taking fifth place at 165 was Niav Layton of Palo Alto following an 84.

Next up on the JTNC calendar is the Summer Series IV Championship, to be held July 14-15 at Schaffer’s Mill Club in Truckee.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 19, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Thursday in the Summer Series II Championship at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.

San Jose resident Justin Suh shot 7-under 137 and Redwood Shores resident Lucy Li shot 5-under 139 to win their respective divisions at the Summer Series II Championship held Wednesday and Thursday at par-72 Poppy Ridge Golf Course.

With their victories, both Suh and Li earned automatic berths into this year’s PGA Junior Championship, slated for August 3-6 at Miramont Country Club in Texas.

Suh, who will begin playing for USC in the fall, captured his second JTNC title of the 2014-2015 season thanks to a brilliant opening round.

On Wednesday, the 2015 San Francisco City champion caught fire, posting a stellar 6-under 66 that featured seven birdies and just one bogey. Suh was perfect on his front-nine, posting a 32 with four birdies and no bogeys.

The opening 66 gave Suh some breathing room, and he’d take advantage of it, shooting a second round 71 to defeat runner-up Ashkaan Hakim of San Ramon by four strokes.

In his second round, Suh was the epitome of steady, posting a birdie to go with 17 pars.

Hakim, who had opened with a sluggish 1-over 73, turned things around in the second round, carding a 68 that featured five birdies and just one bogey.

Finishing tied for third place in the Boys’ Championship at a total of 2-under 142 were three players—Ray Navis of Nipomo, Finigan Tilly of Redwood City and Matt Heitel of Redwood City.

Both Navis and Tilly shot final round scores of 70. In Wednesday’s first round, Tilly recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 2^nd hole of the Zinfandel Course.

Heitel was only two behind Suh after the first round, carding a solid 68 that included five birdies and a bogey.

In a card-off, Tilly was awarded third place in the Boys’ Championship.

Over in the Girls’ Championship, Li, who was the darling of the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, had to survive a playoff with Pleasanton’s Xinyang Wang to win the title.

A thriller, Wednesday’s first round saw Belinda Hu of San Ramon take the lead with a stellar 5-under 67 that included eight birdies and three bogeys. On the back-nine, Hu was a machine, carding a 7-under 29 that included five straight birdies from holes No.12 through No.16.

As great as Hu was though, she’d have company atop the leaderboard. Coming in with matching 68’s, and leaving them just a stroke back after day one, were Li, Wang and Michelle Xie of Palo Alto.

In Thursday’s finale, it became a duel between Li and Wang. Li, who last year at age 11 became the youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open,  got to a total of 6-under with a birdie on No.4, but bogeyed the 7^th to fall back to 5-under. She’d par her final 11 holes for a 71 and score of 139.

Wang, meanwhile, got to a total of 5-under with a birdie on the 16^th. She’d bogey the 17^th to fall one behind Li, but made up the difference with a clutch birdie on the 18^th to force extra holes. In the playoff, Li won on the first hole.

Hu, who had held the first round lead, shot a second round 79 that included an ace on the par-3 2^nd of the Zinfandel Course to finish alone in fifth place at 146.

Xie shot a final round 73 to finish in third place at 141. Katherine Zhu of San Jose came in fourth at 144 following a 72.

Also carding a hole-in-one in the Girls’ Championship was Dublin’s Carissa Wu, who aced the par-3 3^rd hole on the Chardonnay Course in the second round.

San Jose resident Sabrina Iqbal, who was looking to tie her own record for consecutive JTNC wins (4), finished in 12^th place at 150.

Also turning out to be a barnburner was the Boys’ First Flight Championship.

There, Brad Sparrer of Hollister shot a final round 69 to edge runner-up Raymond Abels of Pleasanton by a stroke.

Coming off a first round 73, Sparrer posted an eagle on the par-5 5^th and added four birdies to go against a bogey and double-bogey to come in with a two-day total of 2-under 142.

Abels, who opened with a 74, also had an eagle (par-5 9^th) and four birdies to go with a bogey and double-bogey.

Finishing in third place was Corte Madera’s Ian Gilligan, who came in at 146 following a final round 71.

Fourth place in the Boys’ First Flight Championship went to Michael Shaw of Pleasanton at 153. Darren Pang of San Ramon and Jeremy Choi of Fremont tied for fifth place at 155.

The Girls’ First Flight Championship also came down to the wire.

Divya Tadimeti of Palo Alto shot a final round 77 to finish at 156, edging runner-up Alice Liu of Pleasanton, had a final round 80, by a shot.

Third place went to Vanessa Van Pell of Lafayette at 160. Catherine Batang of South San Francisco and Madison Beckett of Santa Rosa finished fourth and fifth, respectively, at 162 and 163.

Next up on the JTNC calendar is the Summer Series III Championship, to be held June 22-23 at El Macero Country Club in El Macero.

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (June 15, 2015) – Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday in the Summer Series I Championship at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

San Jose resident Thomas Hutchison shot 4-under 140 and San Jose resident Sabrina Iqbal shot 1-over 145 to win their respective divisions at the Summer Series I Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-72 The Reserve at Spanos Park.

Hutchison picked up his first win of the season thanks to a stellar second round.

The runner-up at this year’s San Francisco City Championship and the JTNC Spring Series VI Championship, Hutchison shot a final round 4-under 68 to come from three back and claim the title.

In Sunday’s final round, Hutchison was 1-over through his first five but quickly got back to red figures with back-to-back birdies on holes No.6 and No.7. After making the turn, he was perfect, adding three more birdies with zero bogeys for a back-nine 33.

While Hutchison was making a charge, first round leader Justin Gums of Lodi went the other direction. Gums, who had opened with a 69, shot a second round 74 to finish three behind Hutchison.

A day after carding five birdies and just two bogeys, Gums posted three birdies but also five bogeys to come in at 143. In Saturday’s first round, Hutchison posted three birdies and three bogeys.

Ashkaan Hakim of San Ramon finished third in the Boys’ Championship at 145 after rounds of 73-72.

Fourth place went to Napa’s Joseph Bosetti at 146 (74-72) and fifth place went to Folsom’s Austin Fox at 147 (74-73).

In the Girls’ Championship, things were so close that extra holes were needed.

Coming off two straight wins, Iqbal and Ty Akabane of Danville finished regulation tied at 1-over 145 after final rounds of 70 and 73, respectively.

In what turned out to be a thriller, Iqbal won on the second  hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim her third straight win and 14^th overall JTNC title.

On Saturday, Akabane was in control, as the 2014 California Women’s Amateur Championship Helen Lengfeld Flight runner-up took a one shot lead over Rocklin’s Nicole Schroeder with a 72. Iqbal, meanwhile, opened with a 75.

In the crucial final round, Akabane had two birdies but also three bogeys en route to shooting a 73. Iqbal, on the other hand, had two birdies and two bogeys, but the Pioneer High sophomore also had the shot of the tournament.

On the par-3 15^th, Iqbal made an ace that helped her gain two quick strokes. At the time, Akabane still held the lead, but she’d finish her round with back-to-back bogeys on the 17^th and 18^th to let Iqbal back in it.

Schroeder finished her second round with back-to-back birdies on the 17^th and 18^th, but was stung earlier by a bogey on the 16^th. She’d finish alone in third place at 146.

San Jose’s Samantha Oliva finished in fourth place in the Girls’ Championship at 150 (77-73). Yoonhee Kim of San Ramon and Amanjoty Sangha of San Mateo each grabbed a share of fifth place, coming in at 153 after shooting final rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, Michael Shaw of Pleasanton also had a comeback to remember.

After opening with an 80, Shaw had a 69 that featured six birdies and three bogeys to come in at 149 and defeat runner-up Alex Hom of Belmont by a stroke.

Hom, who had opened with a 73, shot a final round 77 to finish at 150.

Third place in the Boys’ First Flight Championship went to Chase Godi of Pleasanton, who defeated Ian Gilligan of Corte Madera in a card-off. Both Godi and Gilligan came in at 151 after final rounds of 74 and 75, respectively.

Coming in tied for fifth at 153 were Santa Cruz’ Bradley Vu and San Jose’s John Heckel.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, San Jose’s Kaleiya Romero was a freight train. Romero carded rounds of 72 and 70 to finish at 2-under 142 and defeat co-runner-ups Niav Layton of Palo Alto and Alice Liu of Pleasanton by 12 shots.

Over her 36 holes, Romero posted eight birdies with just six bogeys.

Layton and Liu each finished at 154, with Layton being awarded second place in a card-off.

Three players—Faith Low of Foster City, Corine Tan of Alameda and Roseville’s Chisay Arai—all finished T-4 in the Girls’ First Flight Championship at 157.

Next up on the JTNC schedule is the Summer Series II Championship, to be held June 17-18 at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore.

CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners in Spring Series VIII at The Golf Club at Roddy Ranch

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (May 18, 2015) –Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday in the Spring Series VIII Championship at The Golf Club at Roddy Ranch in Antioch.

Pleasanton resident Noah Woolsey shot 3-under 141 and San Jose resident Sabrina Iqbal shot 1-over 145 to win their respective divisions at the Spring Series VIII Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-72 The Golf Club at Roddy Ranch.

Woolsey picked up his second Spring Series win, but he had to hold a pack of three players to get it.

In Saturday’s first round, Woolsey was solid, posting a 2-under 70 that included three birdies and a bogey. It wasn’t good enough for the lead, however, as Pleasanton’s John Fracisco went two strokes lower, carding a 68 that featured six birdies and two bogeys.

Also in the mix after the first round were San Jose’s Daniel Kim and Albert Im of Sunnyvale, who came in with rounds of 70 and 72, respectively.

On Sunday, it became a wild chase for the title.

With birdies at No.6, No.9 and No.10, Woolsey got to a total of 5-under. Fracisco, meanwhile, went 1-over through his first 10 to drop to 3-under. Im, on the other hand, opened with a bogey on the 1^st to fall to 1-over, while Kim had bogeys on No.1 and No.5 to fall back to even-par.

The early birdies came in handy for Woolsey, because on both the 15^th and 17^th holes he’d card bogeys, leading to a 71 and two-day total of 141. As for his pursuers, Fracisco got to 4-under with a birdie on the 11^th, but he’d quickly give three shots back with a bogey on No.12 and a double-bogey on the 13^th. Fracisco would birdie the 18^th, but by then it was too late, as he’d card a 74 to come in at 142.

With a birdie on the 14^th, Im got to a total of 3-under, but he’d lose traction with an ensuing bogey on No.15. On his final three holes Im made par, leaving him with a 70 and two-day total of 142. Kim would also finish at 142 after shooting a final round 72 that featured three birdies and three bogeys. In a card-off, Im was awarded second place with Kim taking second.

Also trying to catch Woolsey, who also won the Spring Series III Championship, was Lafayette resident Ryan Burnett. Coming off an opening round 74, Burnett had the craziest final round. On the front-nine, he’d birdie four of his first six holes to get to 2-under but later bogeyed the 9^th for a 33. After making the turn, Burnett opened his first five holes by going—birdie, bogey, birdie, double-bogey, birdie. He’d also bogey the 16^th but birdied the 18^th for a rollercoaster 69, moving him to fifth place at 143.

For Iqbal, it took a solid second round to pick up her second straight victory.

Iqbal, the defending JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year, opened Saturday’s first round with a 2-over 74 that left her tied for second with Concord’s Yealimi Noh. Leading the championship was San Jose’s Samantha Hutchison, who shot a steady 3-under 71 that featured three birdies and two bogeys.

Like the Boys’ Championship, Sunday’s final round would see a shuffle atop the leaderboard.

Iqbal started out fantastically, going 4-under through her first 13 holes after making four birdies to get to a total of 2-under. The Pioneer High freshman bogeyed three of her final four holes, but Iqbal’s hot start gave her a 71 and two-day total of 145.

As for Noh, she’d do the opposite of Iqbal. With three bogeys within her first 14 holes, Noh fell back early to a total of 5-over. A pair of late birdies gave her a 73 and two-day total of 147, landing her in second place.

Like Noh, Hutchison also slipped, going from her opening 71 to a 77 to finish third at 148.

Finishing in fourth place in the Girls’ Championship was San Ramon’s Yoonhee Kim, who had back-to-back rounds of 75 to come in at 150. Taking fifth place was fellow San Ramon resident Angela Bagasbas, who shot 159 (76-83).

In the Boys’ First Flight Championship, things were also tight as Fremont’s Ethan Chen shot 71 and came from behind to edge runner-up Brad Sparrer by a stroke.

Chen, who had opened with a birdie-less 78, got going in the finale, posting five birdies to go with two bogeys and a double-bogey to finish at 5-over 149. The biggest birdie of his round was no doubt on 18, as it helped him slip by Sparrer. Sparrer came in at 150 after back-to-back rounds of 75, while Diablo’s Spencer Chamberlain took third at 153 (76-77).

Finishing in a tie for fourth in the Boys’ First Flight at 154 were San Leandro’s Adrian Davis and Menlo Park’s Jonathan Dicks, who had final rounds of 78 and 79, respectively.

The Girls’ First Flight Championship also was also a nail-biter, as Alameda’s Elizabeth Scholtes shot 81 to finish at 160 and hold off runner-up Alice Liu of Pleasanton by a stroke.

Both tied at 79 after the first round, the difference for Scholtes was a late Liu bogey on the 17^th.

Finishing in a tie for third in the Girls’ First Flight was Cynthia Zhang of Milpitas and Catherine Batang, who each came in at 164 after final rounds of 80 and 84, respectively. Zhang was awarded third place in a card-off.

Liam Sklar of Los Gatos placed fifth at 166 after a final round 83.

The event concluded the Spring Series portion of the 2014-2015 JTNC season. Next up is the Summer Series I Championship, to be held June 13-14 at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

CIG-Sponsored Junior Golf Tour of Northern California Crowns Winners in Spring Series VII at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (May 18, 2015) –Sponsored by Capital Insurance Group, the 2015 Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC) crowned champions Sunday in the Spring Series VII Championship at Dragonfly Golf Club in Madera.

Alamo resident Ryan Grauman shot 7-under 137 and San Jose resident Sabrina Iqbal shot 6-under 138 to win their respective divisions at the Spring Series VII Championship held Saturday and Sunday at par-72 Dragonfly GC.

Grauman picked up his first win of the season thanks in part to a brilliant second round.

In Saturday’s opening round, Grauman grabbed a share of the lead with Fresno’s Tyler Gardner after the two came in with matching scores of 1-under 71.

Grauman was the epitome of steady in the first round, carding two birdies and a bogey to go with 15 pars. Gardner, meanwhile, had a much more wild day, carding five birdies (including back-to-back birdies on holes No.10 and 11 and No. 13 and 14) to go with four bogeys and nine pars.

Also in the mix following Saturday’s opener were San Jose’s Sebastian Iqbal and Anthony Georgouses of Fresno, who each came in with 73’s.

On Sunday, Grauman took control of the championship. He’d card a sensational, bogey-free 6-under 66 that featured four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 13^th.

At a total of 2-under after his front-nine, a sizzling back-nine gave Grauman a 31 and led to a comfortable seven stroke victory over Gardner.

A day after his 71, Gardner was steadier—carding 13 pars—but he’d only pick up two birdies to go against three bogeys.

Also making a move on Sunday was Kingsburg resident Brian Stark, who followed up an opening round 76 with a 3-under 69 to move to third place. A day after posting two birdies and six bogeys, Stark penciled in four birdies to go against just one bogey.

Finishing in a tie for fourth in the Boys’ Championship at 148 were Iqbal, Georgouses and Richmond’s Carlo Gatmaytan.

Iqbal and Georgouses both fell backwards in the second round with a pair of matching 78’s. Gatamaytan climbed the leaderboard, shooting a 72 after opening with a 76.

Sabrina Iqbal also cruised to the title, winning the Girls’ Championship division by 13 strokes.

The 2014 JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year, Iqbal grabbed a six shot lead over the field with a sensational first round 67 that included six birdies and just one bogey. The Pioneer High freshman was almost nearly as good on Sunday, posting a 71 that featured five birdies, one bogey and a triple-bogey. Over her 36 holes, Iqbal would card birdie on nearly a third of them (11).

Iqbal entered the event as the leader in the JTNC Girls’ Player of the Year points standings.

Finishing in second place was Friant’s Jacqueline Ngo, who came in at 151 after rounds of 77-74. During the 74, Ngo had a birdie and three bogeys.

Also carding a second round 74 was Fresno’s Aya Enjoki, who finished third at 152.

Taking fourth place in the Girls’ Championship at 155 (73-82) was Tiffany Cha of San Ramon. San Jose’s Aishvarya Bedi finished fifth at 156 (81-75).

Things were a bit closer in the Boys’ First Flight Championship. There, Fresno’s Michael Jura III shot a 1-under 71 to come in at 146 and defeat runner-up Kyle Kuest by four strokes.

Jura, who was tied with two other players after a first round 75, made his move on Sunday by carding four birdies to go with a bogey and double-bogey.

Kuest, who also hails from Fresno, had back-to-back rounds of 75 to finish second at 150. Third place went to Danville’s Alex Sun, who finished at 151 after rounds of 78-73.

Finishing in a tie for fourth in the Boys’ First Flight Championship were Casey Leebrick of San Luis Obispo and Bradley Vu of Santa Cruz, who both came in at 152 after finals rounds of 75 and 77, respectively.

In the Girls’ First Flight Championship, Sammy Lee of San Ramon had a final round 80 but held on to defeat runner-up Kaleiya Romero of San Jose by a stroke.

Lee had taken the first round lead with a solid 73 that included four birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey. In the second round, she’d open the door by carding three bogeys and a double-bogey on her final four holes.

Romero, who shot a first round 79, made a move on Sunday with a pair of birdies, but she’d bogey the 18^th, one of her five bogeys on the day.

Third place went to Alameda’s Elizabeth Scholtes, who came in at 155 after rounds of 76-79.

The Spring Series continues with the Spring Series VIII Championship, to be held May 23-24 at The Golf Club at Roddy Ranch in Antioch.
